The Guns of Shiloh A Story of the Great Western Campaign edition by Joseph A Joseph Alexander Altsheler Children eBooks
Born during the war itself, the author lived his boyhood with Civil War veterans. He wrote during a time that the old men were meeting at Gettysburg and other battlefields for reunions. By alternating narrators of titles between cousins from North and South, he tells the war from a young man's experience.Altsheler wrote because there was a lack of wholesome, educational books for young people. He covered a wide variety of U.S. and European history in well over eighty books. He managed four about WWI, but died before he could complete more.
Children of his day had no video games, tv, or other media competition. I have seen these go from a few remaining copies in libraries, to expensive collector's items to free e-books. These are suitable for serious readers, old and young. Enjoy the treasure you can have inexpensively.

The Guns of Shiloh A Story of the Great Western Campaign edition by Joseph A Joseph Alexander Altsheler Children eBooks Reviews
Slow
Having just visited the Shiloh Battleground this past summer, the story of the battle rang seemingly very realistic in content and presentation. I would highly recommend the book to anyone who has an interest in our nation's struggle to remain as one nation during that period of our history. Well done.
A well written novel novel shows the events that leading to to battle at Shiloh the eyes of a union soldier starting at Bull Run ending at Shiloh. It describes the horror of face to face war and young boys grow to men of valor. I recommend this book highly.
very good read! .. accurate reporting of the battles of the civil war .. great character development ..
I highly recommend this book ..

by JOSEPH A. ALTSHELER
This is a good series of books about the Civil War that mixes history with novel and is quite easy to read. The author takes some liberties with reality but does a good job in taking the reader through the major portions of the war years and guides him through important historic facts without making it seem as a history lesson. Although I am not quite finished with the series, I am enjoying it very much and find the order very enlightening and enjoyable. It's best to start with THE GUNS OF BULL RUN and follow through in order, however any of the books are good by themselves.
One really needs to read the entire series in sequence, beginning with "The Guns of Bull Run" and ending with "The Tree of Appomattox" in order to grasp the increasing intensity of the various battles, as seen through the eyes of the two opposing Kentucky cousins. The "Guns of Shiloh" episode is basically a factual but fictionalized account of one of the most important battles to that time, and takes the reader through General Ulysses S. Grant's campaigns in the Western Theater of the war. Truly an excellent volume!
I had never heard of Joseph Altsheler, but how glad I am to have found him. This newspaper editor was a prolific writer, he has written mainly books about the American Civil War & US history. Having tried one book I have ordered the complete works. His characters are real, his history is accurate, his battle descriptions full of energy and telling detail. His journalistic background shows to advantage, nothing superfluous. At 2dollars 99 for the collection, this a fantastic bargain. I cannot wait to start the next book
